I just discovered the identity of a fellow blogger (FB) that I hope to meet some day.
I am thrilled and excited. On one hand I do want to tell the FB that I am currently working with someone they have worked with before. On the other I don’t like the idea that it is so easy to be found discovered and spoken about.
I am not sure how I feel about this. What about you?

That’s the reason why as much as possible, I don’t want to blog about too personal stuff — especially work. It’s easy to be “discovered” in the blogosphere.

Nothing is hidden on the blue nowhere. If you want to find someone, it’s only a matter of time.
If you don’t want to be found, avoid the internet. It’s a little uncomfy sure but then a small price to pay. Unless you are someone famous.

That is a good idea. Even my husband who is so conscious of the trails he leaves behind on the virtual world is so easily “googable”. I do consider that freaky and not so nice.

I agree, that is my mantra for most things. If I don’t like something, I try and not be a part of it. But in today’s world how does one not have an online account, a research done in school quoted some place, a committee that you have been a part of mentioned in some report available online, be a part of your college website? How does one prevent any of these? How do you feel about being discovered by people you wouldn’t necessarily want to be discovered by. I know being found is not avoidable. It is the ease with which one can do it, that I find well..freaky.

I am not talking about finding friends through the blog. I am talking about using 2 hours on the internet and finding out personal/professional information about people who don’t even matter to us.

i doubt if one can be in the virtual world and yet avoid being discovered. frankly, i wouldn’t mind. and the few ones (FBs) i have met in real have all turned out to be fantastic meetings

more than being discovered i fear discovering! we’ve lost all self control n we go around looking for details about people … the world was a happier place when we were ignorant about personal stuff.

True, but how comfortable are you with the thought, that someone can follow your blog and the blog of your new found friends and actually put together your entire biography? And the ease with which it can be done.

I am not comfortable at all! That was the point of a pseudonym. But then I wonder does it matter? Or am I being paranoid. The few blog friends I have have turned out to be great so going by a precedent, I shouldn’t worry. But there is this nagging feeling…always when I am discovered. So I understand where you come from.

it happened to me very recently. initially, i was quite perturbed. but then the moment i was laying myself bare in this virtual world, i was subjecting myself to the possibility of being discovered, sooner or later.

I’d be thrilled. How often does one meet interesting people. I understand the increasing privacy issues online, but one needs to take care at times. 🙂
