Thoughts please.

Please read said article. So what do you think? Is it the fault of social media inducing depression in our young, or is it that society is less invested in the youth leaving them vulnerable.

What do you think?

  1. I think the latter. Facebook is just another medium through which people can experience low self-esteem, low mood, loneliness, etc.

I have written in an old blog post of mine about how depressing it was to see other people have fun and you are doing nothing with your life on Facebook, so in a sense, this article kinda scratched on the surface of where it hurts. 😛 I think the article has a point that Facebook, by virtue of being a social networking site, can also highlight to some kids the downsides of not having a social life. But it’s not so much the fact that it’s *Facebook* that’s the problem as it is the fact that Facebook happens to be one of the media through which a lot of teens interact these days.

When I was volunteering for Samaritans, both in our sample e-mails and real e-mails, there were messages from girls who were suffering with a lot of problems that made their self-esteem very low, and they often talked about ‘this social networking site they went on’ where they tried talking to the guys they liked and they would get no response and they would see him being active on other girls’ pages and it made them feel all the more depressed. Not sure how well this fits into clinical depression, but hey. I can’t deny I myself have been there and done that.

I don’t think social media *can* induce depression in the young, it’s just another platform for them to feel the symptoms of what we may later on characterise as depression if marked and prolonged and impacting enough.

You know what EU? You’ve inspired me to write a post on something similar and very close to my heart. I might just have a go at it once my mock OSCE is out of the way. 🙂

PS: Are you following the ICC World Cup, by any chance? Ind vs Pak soon, oh the tension on top of exams too! 😛
